    AIR FREIGHT UPDATES


    Using smaller airports rather than major hubs can mean a ‘greener’ flight

    Shippers should urge their airfreight providers to consider emissions – and they could see a big CO2 saving by choosing secondary airports.
    Research by Chicago Rockford (RFD), the upstart Illinois airport, shows aircraft use less fuel and emit less CO2 and other pollutants at smaller facilities like RFD than at major hubs. Read more here.

    Report points to signs of optimism for a new ILWU-PMA deal

    Could the be a possibility of a West Coast port labor deal being done between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) be finally inching to reality? A recent report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published yesterday indicated that could be the case. Read more here.

    Hapag-Lloyd’s Q1 volumes hold up better than Maersk’s

    Hapag-Lloyd said today its cargo volumes “remained subdued”, but added that expected “a pick-up in demand” in the second half of the year, as retailer destocking is gradually phased out.
    However, the Hamburg-headquartered carrier seems to have outperformed most of its peers in what was a weak quarter for liner trades, describing some of its South American trade vessels as “choc-a-bloc full”. Read more here (login required).

    Container rate war ‘plain as daylight’

    Container carriers are embarking on a rates war, according to one leading analyst, while other experts contacted by Splash remain circumspect to label today’s diminished container earnings landscape as an all-out battle to the bottom.
    Hua Joo Tan, who heads up research outfit Linerlytica, described the rates war as being “plain as daylight”. Read more here.

    CN Network Update: Wildfires in Edson, Alberta

    CN has advised customers that service has been fully restored in Western Canada after wildfires near Edson, Alberta caused the railway to suspend service in the Edmonton-to-Jasper corridor on Saturday and resume service with restrictions on certain commodities
