    Latin American aviation resurgence drives expansion of freighter activity

    A resurgent Latin American airfreight market is driving an increase in freighter activities in the region.
    Last week, Colombia-based Avianca announced it would be adding between two and four converted A330 freighters to its fleet over the next two years, beginning towards the end of this year. Read more here (login required).

    Air traffic at busy airports is controlled through the use of slots. A pair of slots gives an airline the right to land and depart an aircraft (at specified times) and use airport facilities. There are guidelines in place for the use and allocation of available slots. But when there are none available to allocate, airlines will often pay large sums to acquire them. Read more here.

    Rebecca Dye, a commissioner at the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) in the US, yesterday released her final report after a two-year investigation into how the pandemic affected liner transportation, in which she suggested the global carrier market was competitive, and that massive American consumer demand was the root of the supply chain pain felt since 2020.     Pedal power: Colombo dockworkers issued with bicycles as fuel shortages cripple local economy

    The dire economic situation in Sri Lanka has seen port workers at the island’s main port of Colombo issued with bicycles to get around as fuel shortages hit home.
    Sri Lanka is facing power cuts and fuel shortfalls due to foreign exchange shortages, with the country also battling severe inflation in one of the worst economic crises to hit the island for generations. Read more here.

    CP inks deal with CMA CGM for Canadian service

    Canadian Pacific will become CMA CGM’s primary rail provider in Canada, servicing the ports of Vancouver, Montreal and Saint John, N.B.
    CP’s access to the Port of Vancouver and Port of Montreal, combined with CP’s strategic connection to Port Saint John via New Brunswick Southern Railway, will enable CP to move the majority of CMA CGM’s freight from Canadian ports to key Canadian and US Midwest inland markets. Read more here.

    Shanghai to start lifting 2-month COVID-19 lockdown Wednesday

    Shanghai authorities say they will take some major steps Wednesday toward reopening China’s largest city after a two-month COVID-19 lockdown that has throttled the national economy and largely bottled up millions of people in their homes.
    Full bus and subway service will be restored, as will basic rail connections with the rest of China, Vice Mayor Zong Ming said Tuesday at a daily news conference on the city’s outbreak. Read more here.

    Shippers, forwarders expect “chaos” in peak season

    More than half of freight forwarders, traders and shippers expect greater chaos in the coming peak season as compared to that in 2021.
    The latest survey from Container xChange found that this year’s summer peak season cargo surge will be worse, exceeding the disruptions caused in the peak season of 2021. Read more here.
