EU to end cargo-in-the-cabin flights

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) will put a stop to cargo-in-the-cabin flights beyond July 31.
The use of the passenger cabin for cargo, known as cargo-in-the-cabin flights, have been operating since 2020, after the EASA issued approvals and exemptions for the transport of cargo in passenger cabins on a case-by-case basis. Read more here.

Covid testing in south China could bring more limitations on exports

The Shanghai lockdown is delaying shipping schedules in South China and bringing down spot rates.
And now Guangzhou has become the latest port city to undergo mass Covid-testing, a frequent precursor to tough restrictions under China’s zero-Covid policy. Read more here (login required).

CMA CGM ships to stop loading plastic waste from mid-April

Following a decision to no longer carry plastic waste on its ships as of 1 June, French container shipping major CMA CGM informed that no plastic waste will be loaded onboard the company’s vessels from 15 April 2022. Read more here.

Beijing intervenes to try and keep goods flowing

Some residents of Shanghai stepped out of their homes for the first time in more than two weeks today, as the city took tentative steps towards easing a Covid-19 lockdown.
The city has classed residential units into three risk categories, to allow those in areas without positive cases for a stretch of two weeks to engage in “appropriate activity” in their neighbourhoods. Read more here.

Maritime Labour Convention reaches 100th ratification

The 100th ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) has been marked by a ceremony at the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) headquarters in Geneva.
It means that more than 96% of the world’s gross shipping tonnage is now covered by this internationally agreed standard which also applies to most of the seafarer labour supplying countries of the world. Read more here. 

Ever Forward container removal operation gets underway

Container removal began Saturday as part of the Ever Forward boxship refloat operation in Chesapeake Bay.
The process – using barges alongside – will continue in daylight hours throughout this week with four to five containers being offloaded per hour in the complex operation. Approximately 550 containers are expected to be transferred. Read more here.
