Empty Return Update

Rail container depots in the Greater Toronto Area are experiencing high levels of volume and congestion. This is having an adverse effect on empty return service following container unloading.

Secondary depots have been opened and, in some cases, nearing capacity. Some empty containers are being held at truck carrier terminals, awaiting return times to become available. As a result, extra costs relating to chassis detention and yard storage, as billed by truck carriers, are being incurred.

Similar situations are unfolding in Vancouver and Montreal but to a lesser degree than Toronto.
