    Poor weather in China forces 4,500 flight cancellations

    Some 4,500 flights out of major Chinese airports have been cancelled this week, owing to Covid lockdowns and poor weather. Zhengzhou, Chinese home of Cargolux, has seen more than 1,400 flights cancelled since Tuesday because of flooding. And a typhoon hit Guangdong, cutting more than 1,600 flights at Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai. Read more here.

    No evidence yet of widespread price-out of low-value cargo

    There’s no firm evidence yet that the current record-high sea freight rates are ‘pricing out’ low-value cargo from the market to significant levels, according to analysis by Sea-Intelligence, despite anecdotal reports indicating that it is beginning to happen – or soon will.
    In its latest Sunday Spotlight briefing, Sea-Intelligence examined the relationship between transpacific cargo weight and value “to determine if the unprecedented increase in freight rates over the past year has created a situation where low-value commodities are being priced out by higher-value commodities”.     Prices for sought after panamax boxships have more than doubled in the space of just three months, one of the sharpest vessel appreciations recorded in the history of shipping.
    As a result of the increased S&P market and soaring freight and charter rates, 15-year-old 4,250 teu tonnage has leapt from $20m at the end of March to be worth around $48m today, data from VesselsValue shows. Read more here.


    ‘Crunch time in the US’ – shippers advised to ‘brace for extended peak season’

    When the bank account is full, European consumers like to save. But US consumers like to spend.
    That phenomenon – along with a faster economic recovery in the US, growing vaccination rates and government stimuli – is driving import demand, and driving up freight rates, both in air and sea.

    CN optimistic despite wildfires, congestion and Delta variant

    Canadian railway CN is still recovering from a nearly two-week outage of a bridge that is part of a key route to Vancouver. The impacts of the outage remain to be seen, as the bridge outage, as well as wildfire conditions, have contributed to a backlog at the Port of Vancouver, said CN executives during the railway’s second-quarter 2021 earnings call Tuesday.     Activities that Require a Safe Food for Canadians Licence: Update

    The guidance Food business activities that require a licence under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations has been updated to include the “thawing” activity in section 4.1, the licence requirements for holding live fish in water in section 5.12, and the licence requirements for storing and handling an edible meat product in its imported condition in section 5.21.


    Ontario imposes restrictions in northwest as wildfires burn

    Ontario imposed new restrictions on mining, rail, construction and transportation industries in the province’s northwest on Tuesday to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires.
    The move came as 107 active wildfires burn in the region, with 32 of those not under control. Read more here.
