    ‘Optimistic, but realistic’ United Cargo to relaunch direct flights to China

    US carriers are heading back to China.
    After Washington and Beijing climbed down from their dispute over the number of carriers and frequencies allowed, Delta led the charge from the west on 21 June with the start of services from Seattle to Shanghai, operating twice a week. Read more here.

    OCEAN FREIGHT UPDATES

    Strike Notice, Port of Montreal

    The Port of Montreal shared the following information on Tuesday:
    We would like to inform you that the Maritime Employers Association has received a strike notice starting on Thursday, July 2 at 3 p.m. and ending on Saturday, July 4 at 6:59 a.m. Thus, 2 of the 19 terminals at the Port of Montreal, 2 container terminals operated by MGTP, will be stopped during these two days. Be advised that the MGTP terminals affected are Racine Container Terminal (Section 62) and Cast Container Terminal (Section 77). All other terminals and bulk sectors are operating normally.
    These pressure tactics, exercised by the Longshoremen’s Union, will last 40 hours. Consequently, the Port of Montreal and its partners expect to be able to resume activities as soon as Saturday, July 4 at 7 a.m. Efforts will be made to make up for the delays that will be caused by this exceptional situation.
    The Montreal Port Authority is closely monitoring the situation and we hope that the employer of the longshoremen, the Maritime Employers Association, and the Union will be able to come to an agreement quickly.

    Housed on the the myMSC business platform, the new Instant Quote gives customers a shipment price online in under a minute. Clients then have the option to instantly complete the booking with the generated quote on myMSC.     Vietnam’s Cai Mep port gets set to benefit from supply chain switch from China

    South Vietnam’s Cai Mep-Thi Vai container port recently saw the maiden call of 2M’s TP17 service – another milestone in the long-awaited comeback of the much maligned deepwater complex.
    The 12,000 teu Seroja Lima was welcomed by the APM Terminals-operated Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), the second-largest of the port’s four competing facilities and boasting a 25% share of volumes. Read more here.

    Shrinking contract rates pushing ocean carriers towards the spot market

    Declining long-term contract rates on major tradelanes may be a concern for ocean carriers, but the bullish short-term market is proving the “silver lining” that could shift their focus towards the spot market.

    SEATTLE – Amazon.com, Inc. plans to open a second facility in Barrhaven, a suburb of Ottawa, Ontario.
    The new fulfillment centre, which is anticipated to open in 2021, will create more than 1,000 new, full-time jobs. This will be Amazon’s eighth facility in Ontario and its 14th fulfillment centre in Canada.
