    Forwarders see their cargo bumped as vaccine shipments take off

    It’s started: forwarders are beginning to feel the pain as vaccine distribution begins – they are getting bumped from booked flights.
    “Singapore Airlines has been loading vaccines in Amsterdam for the past few days,” claimed one European air freight forwarder, “I keep getting freight offloaded. It’s started.” Read more here (login required).

    The challenge of flying billions of temperature-sensitive Covid-19 vaccine doses around the world next year will be complex but is definitely manageable for the air freight sector and seems likely to be easier than initially thought, according to senior freight forwarding and logistics sources. Read more here.

    Airlines’ hopes of a significant further peak-season boost in November partially failed to materialise, according to early statistics and analysis by CLIVE Data Services and TAC Index, although their figures indicate a further month-on-month rise in tonnages and higher China-Europe prices for the month as a whole. Read more here.

    ONE Apus stack collapse could be the largest container loss since MOL Comfort

    New details have emerged about the loss of containers overboard from the ONE Apus this week that suggest it could be the largest single container loss since the sinking of the MOL Comfort in 2013.
    Yesterday ONE released a situation report saying 1,900 boxes or more could have been lost on Monday night when the vessel hit heavy weather in the Pacific. Read more here.

    MSC ‘returns to its roots’ with $260m spend on second-hand vessels

    Geneva-headquartered shipping line MSC is “going back to its roots” with its recent purchase of 16 second-hand box ships, according to Alphaliner.
    It was alluding to the first 25 years of MSC’s existence, when the carrier grew rapidly through second-hand vessel acquisitions before receiving its first newbuildings in 1996. Read more here.

    Since the Panama Canal debuted its larger Neopanamax locks in 2016, the three heaviest users have been container ships, liquified natural gas (LNG) carriers and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.     Military will be ready for vaccine distribution, general says

    OTTAWA – The Canadian Armed Forces received formal orders last week to start planning for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, though the military’s top commander says preparations have been underway for longer – and that his force will be ready.
    The order is contained in a planning directive issued last week by chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance. It lays out in detail for the first time how the military expects to help with vaccine distribution. Read more here.
