    Air Canada Cargo: Delays Affecting Retrievals in Toronto

    Air Canada Cargo is expecting some delays in processing freight at its YYZ hub until Wednesday, Dec. 23. Customers are encouraged to use the online Track and Trace function to ensure shipments are ready before dispatching trucks to retrieve them.

    Canada Issues Prohibition Of UK Passenger Flights

    Following moves by several European countries, Canada is also banning flights from the UK as a precaution against a new and more contagious strain of coronavirus reported there. The news came via a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by Transport Canada on December 20th, and was effective midnight December 21st and will last for 72 hours. After this initial period, the prohibition may be extended or enhanced. Read more here.

    Aggressive voyage blanking was a matter of survival, claims Hapag-Lloyd CEO

    Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen has defended criticism of the aggressive blanking strategy of ocean carriers at the start of the pandemic, saying that it was “a matter of survival”.

    He said he did not expect to see many void sailings in the first quarter of next year, but warned of vessel “slidings” from the impact of port congestion. Read more here.


    GROUND & RAIL FREIGHT UPDATES

    CN Customer Advisory: Incentivizing Pickups Next Weekend

    CN continues to experience higher-than-normal ground count at its Brampton and Malport intermodal terminals as a result of a surge in imports.

    Customers are encouraged to pick up loads on weekends to mitigate elevated carter times. CN is offering a rebate of $150 per day for a maximum of 7 days ($1,050) on any containers that have incurred storage if the unit is picked up between Saturday, December 26 at 08:00 and Monday, December 28 at 04:00. This rebate is offered only to the guaranteeing party.

    Canadian trade confidence rebounds

    After the worst survey on record during the initial COVID-19 lockdowns in the spring, Export Development Canada’s Trade Confidence Index (TCI) has increased by more than 20%.
    In our latest TCI, conducted in October and November, the index rose to 67.5 from a depressed 56.0 in May, the lowest score since the survey began in 1999. Read more here.
