    Several Flights Canceled At Heathrow Airport Due To Challenging Weather

    London Heathrow Airport is the latest UK airport to be impacted by snow and ice following a flurry of flight cancellations and delays this morning. Subzero overnight conditions and freezing fog in the morning led to at least 48 flight cancellations and counting. Read more here.

     

    Belgium To Introduce New Taxes On Short-Haul Flights & Private Jets

    Even though aircraft utilizing Brussels Airport are required to pay tax based on the amount of noise made during takeoff and landing, smaller models are usually exempt. This exemption is coming to an end on April 1st of next year. The goal is to tax additional aspects such as air pollution and emissions. Read more here.

     

    Forwarders stick with short-term deals as air cargo volumes fall

    Freight forwarders are continuing to opt for short-term airfreight deals as volumes and rates continue to decline.
    The latest statistics from Xeneta-owned CLIVE Data Services show that in November air cargo volumes declined 8% year on year and were down 2% on October, while the dynamic load factor – based on weight and space – was down five percentage points on last year at 61%. Read more here.

    Lufthansa Cargo aims to cut CO2 with lightweight cargo pallet nets

    Lufthansa Cargo will from January begin using lightweight nets to secure cargo pallets to save weight on flights and reduce CO2 emissions.
    The “Pallet Net Zero” nets made by AmSafe Bridport, which Lufthansa Cargo will be using through its subsidiary Jettainer, weigh between nine and eleven kilograms, which is less than half the weight of a conventional net made of polyester fibres. Read more here.

    Soren Skou to be replaced by Vincent Clerc at Maersk

    After nearly seven years in charge, Soren Skou has announced today he will retire as CEO of A. P. Møller – Mærsk at the end of this year, handing the baton to Vincent Clerc, the current CEO of the company’s ocean and logistics business.
    Robert Uggla, chair of the board of directors, praised Skou’s nearly 40 years of service at Maersk today, saying: “During his tenure as CEO of Maersk, Soren has been instrumental in redefining Maersk into a customer centric end-to-end logistics provider with a global leadership position in sustainable  transportation solutions.” Read more here.

     

    Vancouver port becomes testing bed for alternative fuels

    The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, together with partners from across the port community, are testing various low- and zero-emission fuels and technologies at the Port of Vancouver, as part of the port authority’s efforts to phase out all port-related emissions by 2050 in support of the Government of Canada’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Read more here.

     

    FMC Members Ask Congress for More Authority Over Carrier Agreements

    Two members of the Federal Maritime Commission have asked Congress to change the law to allow the FMC to block anti-competitive agreements between ocean carriers – without first going to court.
    At present, the FMC can’t stop an alliance agreement from taking effect, at least not on its own. It has to file suit in federal court and ask a judge for an injunction. Without court intervention, the alliance agreement can enter into force automatically. Read more here.
